Outta Control! February 28, 2009

Posted by Carly in Uncategorized.

Well my background and such is all better! That was weird huh?

Today at Track practice, it was SO WINDY.

omg.  Ok so normally it is really windy at my school because of its location, but today was just out of control.  We were doing drills up and down the lanes, but while running, we kept on moving from lanes 1-5 to lanes 3-8.  We were getting blown sideways while running!! And while running laps around the track, there was this one area near some dirt…we got pelted in our faces by dirt, sand, and small pebbles.   Our backpacks were getting blown over.  They would pick up speed and roll towards the road, but luckily there was a fence 🙂 .  Our pants and jackets were getting pushed so hard around our legs and arms!! It was so funny looking it was like wearing a flag.  Lastly, you guys know the trust fall game? Where are fall backwards and your friend catches you and you learn to trust them?  Well we were playing that with the wind 🙂  The wind could hold us up very well.  Oh and one more thing.  I was going across the field, and I decided to see it this would work.  I jumped upwards…but got blown forwards.  I easily jumped all the way across the field 😛

Have you guys ever experienced something where the weather was just OUT OF CONTROL?

Your comments are always appreciated, guys.

All About Snow Camp NUMBAH TOO!!! February 23, 2009

Posted by Carly in Uncategorized.

EWell here is number two of the amazing adventures of Carly at Snow Camp!!!!!!

You guys are so excited…I can feel it.

Well let me start off by me waking up…

Wait, first I gotta clarify some things.  The skier group of people are divided into 2 groups…one that leaves at 8 and one that gets on the bus at 9.  The group of kids that doesnt ski, which includes all the middle schoolers (who aren’t allowed to ski) and all the high schoolers who can’t/dont want to ski (seriously, you live in Colorado…what is wrong with you…but anyway…)

Waking…but not quite

At 7 o clock in the morning the Freshman (9th grader) leader goes around and wakes all the freshman who have to take the early bus. None of my group has to take the early bus this year (YESS).  So they get up and get dressed to go skiing (really loudly, I might add) and finally leave for breakfast at 7:30.  30 minutes later, my friend Kelly’s phone sets off an alarm of “Love Story” by Taylor Swift.  I like that song…it has a really catchy tune….moving on…she turns it off and we go back to sleep.  Our leader, Annie, has to drag us all out of bed.  We are running very late 😛 we get on all our warm stuff and go to breakfast at 8:40…of wait, breakfast started ten minutes ago…

We get to breakfast pretty late.  All the tables in the high school section are full, so we have to eat all alone at a table in the empty middle school section.  We are loners!! Oh well.  We finish eating our pancakes with grape jam and sausage (it was very tasty) and we grab our boards/skis and our boots from the cabin and stow them in the bus.   There were two buses, but one was a little late, so everyone was packed onto the first bus, and since my group was late, we got on the bus that was practically empty! It was great! We could each have a seat for our helmets and jackets and a seat for our butts.

Winter Park (before lunch)

We get out of the bus and walked down to the lift.  We divided into two groups.  The group that was good, and the group that wanted to stay on easier runs.  One of my friends earned an automatic spot in the bad group because of her performance last year on a long bump run called “Outhouse”.  Also in that group was our leader and another girl in our group.  Anyway we got on the lift and skiied around.  We didn’t have enough time before lunch to get to Mary Jane but we would do that after lunch, so we just fooled around on the front of the mountain.  This one run was so great, there was practically nobody on it and we zoomed down it…we were going so fast and we were so close to eachother and winding in and out of the gaps with eachother…it was awesome!  If one of us had caught an edge, we wouldve all crashed so hard and bad 😀 .  It was getting close to the time that we were all supposed to meet at the lodge for lunch, so we headed back down to the base.

Each kid at snow camp who goes skiing gets a little coupon thing that is like 11$ dollars for lunch.  Ski places are waaaay overpriced, so 11 dollars is really kinda not a lot.  But I found a good combo meal that had a pulled pork sandwich, a soda, and some chips that was under 11 dollars so I bought it.  it was yummy!  So after we kicked out one of our friends from the “good” team to the “bad” team (she was really slow) we went back out skiing.

Skiing (after lunch)

We met up with another kid who wasn’t at snow camp but he always comes up to ski at winter park.  We all went to this really hard area called The Chutes.  I can’t find a good picture of it, but its really really steep and scary!  It was AWESOME! The snow on the run sucked, but it was still sweet.  And it was a really hard run…check out the sign in front of the entrance if you dont believe me 😛

Break Time/Dinner etc

Oh yeah…thats a big warning sign! We went on Hole-In-The-Wall chute…moving on now…so we finished up skiing and headed back to the bus at around 4:30.  We were all pretty exausted on the way back!  When we got back, we had some free time to get in our costumes for the theme dinner.  The theme was “Rewind” so everyone dressed like we had gone back in time…there were Great Depression people, cavemen, dinosaurs, 40s housewives, 80s spandex and snowsuits, and tons of hippies!!  After the awesome dinner, we all went to Club where this awesome guy talked more about Radical Faith, and then we had small group time. Then it was time for…

Party Night!

There were card games in the game room along with pingpong and fooseball!  The hot tub was open, and the gym had music playing and a huge basketball game going!  And lights-out time was at 1:00 a.m.!!!!!  All my friends and I went into the hot tub.  We swam around in there for a while, but when 1:00 came there was a problem.  It was very very cold out, and we were soaking wet with no towels and wet shoes that no one wanted to put on.  So, carrying our towels and clothes, we all ran back up to our cabin, which wasn’t that close to the hot tub, in our swimsuits and barefoot.  The worst part was running up the metal stairs…our feet were hot from being in the hot tub and our skin STUCK to the metal! We were running as fast as we could so our feet didnt stick too bad, but you could definatly feel it! And it HURT!!

We went to bed at around 2:00, even though lights out was at 1.  Stay tuned for the final part of the Snow Camp adventures!!!

P.S. You all rock!

P.S.S. who is gonna watch the Oscars tonight!!??! I am!!!!

All About Snow Camp! February 17, 2009

Hiya everyone!  I got back from Snow Camp today!! It was soo fun!

Now, because I am starving and insanly lazy, I am going to be writing this very very fast.  There will be spelling mistakes. There will be puntuation mistakes. it will be sloppy.  etc…i might edit it later to make it look nicer 🙂

Got on the big greyhound bus at about 11 a.m. with eight of my friends.  We found a chunk of empty seats in the back and sadly discovered that the seat in front of the bathroom (yeah theres a bathroom on the bus) wouldn’t go back far enough to trap someone in the bathroom for a while (we did that last year to my freind Kelly…heheh)

anyway we get there and we go to our cabin.  we find out that we are sharing the cabin with another group.  now, my group is one of the biggest groups in the whole youth group.  we so is this group.  and we don’t like them. and we don’t like their leader.  and they dont do anything. they just sit there and text and glare at us and do makeup.  and they got to the room faster so they got the bunks.  we had to bring 5 mattresses into the room and put them on the ground so we could have enough beds!  WE WERE SAD!!!

Good thing our awesome leader, Annie, who is a sutdent at CU and a really hilarious person overall, talked to Forrest (the leader of the whole youth group)…and we got to move cabins!  We got to go into a cabin with some freshman girls.  they were ok, but they didnt like to stay up late or anything 😦 except for brittney z. we call her B.Z….she is awesome she is my favorite freshman and i luurve her) anyway, we only have 4 mattresses on the ground in this room and we are a lot happier!

The activity for the day was to get into our activity teams (these are assigned randomly…me and my freinds ignored it and went into team tie-dye) (also, the theme for snow camp was “rewind” so everything was named for old famous things) anyway the activity was that we got a box, 2 swim noodles, duct tape, and 2 pbc pipes.  We had to make a bobsled that would go the farthest when pushed down a snowy path.  The bobsleds could only hold one person, and being the smallest, I was put into the box that had noodles on the bottom to make it slide.  I also had a sweet helmet that other team members had made that looked like it had rockets on the side on.  We went to the starting place and the strong guys started pushing the sled…faster and faster…we reached the “stop pushing the sled” line and they gave one final push.  it was too hard and they pushed too near the top of the box and not enough at the bottom.  The whole box tipped forward (still moving very fast) and I flew out…superman-ing it for a good 5 feet before slamming into the hard snow.  yaaaaay.  there was already spray paint on the snow marking where a previous team’s sled had gone…and my face went right into it.  the spray paint was red…and everyone thought i had split open my cheek! I wasn’t sure because my face was numb.  But spray paint doesn’t come off easily, and I looked like I had a gross scab on my cheek for the rest of the weekend 🙂

After a yummy dinner of lasagna, my group headed to club, where we heard this awesome guy named Albus Brooks (yes, Albus, like Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter)!  He was black, talked like those cool black guys, was about 30 had a high voice (it wasnt all deep, it was high and awesome) and was once a football player for CU.  He was SWEET!  Anyway, he talked about this chapter in the bible, and then me and my group went and talked about what Albus had said.  After that, we had some free time and it was lights out at 11:30…but lights out didn’t stop us from talking 🙂 we got to bed at 1:00 at night 😛

stay tuned for the second day of snow camp! being posted pretty soon!!

Hey all!

I am about to pack my bags and set out for Winter Park!!! yaay!

Despite the name, Winter Park is not some sort of wintery water park 😀 It’s a ski area and a town in the mountains.  If you have heard of the famous ski mountain called Mary Jane, then thats where I’m going basically. Mary Jane is in the Winter Park ski area!

Ok! Well my kids church group, every year, go up to this campsite near winter park. There are big nice cabins and it is always AWESOME and there is always a ton of snow!  Happy happy happy!!!  I am leaving tomorrow!  We go to the pickup site (which happens to be at my high school) and from there, we all get on huge greyhound buses and we drive for 2 hours! (if you dont know what a greyhound bus is, click here for a pic)

I dont think I will have internet connection up there 🙂 But I will be bringing my iPod Touch for musical purposes, so if I get an internet connection up there I could make a short post or two!  But most likely I wont…so expect a big nice long post Monday night all about my fun experience in the 4 feet of snow that is always everywhere!

P.S. Please vote for my entry in Lyon’s Contest!

the Victorian Bushfires February 9, 2009

Posted by Josh in Uncategorized.

Good evening.

On Saturday, February 7th, the mercury soared to 46.4 degrees Celsius – Melbourne’s hottest day ever.

That day is now known as “Black Saturday”.

Dozens and dozens of bushfires tore apart the state, with the death toll currently sitting at 126.  That figure is expected to rise.

Some fires are still raging.

My thoughts are with the victims and their families.

It is the worst natural disaster to ever strike Australia.

Here is an article from “The Australian” Newpaper.

Im Back! February 7, 2009

Hey guys!  I finished my huge project last night…well actually early this morning 😛 At 1:30… 😀

So I’m super exausted, though.  The project was a huge board on Archimedes and how his war technology effected the outcome of the Punic war against Syracuse.  Basically, he was a really smart Greek guy who held off a Roman army with his cool inventions.  He was actually pretty fun to study, but the project was killer.

I’m just going to let you know that I will be posting again! YAAY!!  And I will also be commenting on your guyzes sites again!

Well, I am exausted, so Im gonna visit my fave sites and then go on to bed!

But first…HOW ARE YOU GUYS?? I’ve been gone for a while, so whats new with you? Tell me by commenting or by dropping an email to Carly.Stewart@comcast.net !  I love to hear from you guys.
